Why we built a football brand with an end goal for the ball

PLYRS is the first football brand ever that came into existence already having a sustainable end goal for the ball — upcycling was part of the plan before the first ball was stitched. This article explains what that means in practice and why it shapes every one of our divisions.

Start at the end, not the beginning

Millions of footballs are thrown away every year. For a brand that lives and breathes the game, that is not a detail — it is the problem worth solving. So instead of designing a ball and asking later what happens when it wears out, we designed the whole company around that question first.

That is what "born with an end goal" means: the moment a ball stops playing, it already has somewhere to go. It becomes a keychain, a piece of fan merchandise, or a custom wall art panel through our Football Upcycling Program — kept out of the waste stream and turned into something a fan actually wants to own.

One thread through every division

Art, upcycling and fashion are separate divisions, but the same sustainable thread runs through all of them. Our own workshop keeps production lines short.

The end goal is fully circular football production and a ball upcycling program. We are not there yet, and we would rather say so plainly than overclaim. But every division is pointed at that same horizon.

A brand with a mission

Part of what we build flows back through the PLYRS Foundation to make sport reachable for kids who would otherwise stand on the sideline. In The Hague we work side by side with ADO Den Haag's community programs; further afield we support street children and push for fairer supply chains in the places where we produce.

Football gave us a lifestyle, a livelihood and a community. Building the brand with an end goal for the ball is how we try to give something back to the game.
